A GRIEVING Mary Joy Tabal extended her reign in the women’s category of the 41st Milo Marathon national finals after bagging her fifth straight title yesterday.
Tabal clocked 2:58:01 to defend the women’s division title in the 42k race that started at the Cebu Normal University and ended at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympian and 2017 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist was the first to win the Milo Marathon for five straight years. She had her personal best of 2:47:53 in the national finals in Iloilo City last year.
Tabal could not contain her emotions upon reaching the finish line. Her father, Rolando, died just a day before the race.
“My goal was really to defend my championship. I dedicate this to my father,” said the 28-year-old marathoner. “The route was quite challenging because there were a lot of turns, uphill and downhill areas.”
Finishing behind the Cebuana runner were veterans Christabel Martes (3:04:20), Jho-an Villarama (3:11:27), Judelyn Miranda (3:14:20), and Ruffa Sorongon (3:15:17).
Rounding out the top 10 in the women’s division were Christine Hallasgo (3:24:23), Maricar Camacho (3:25:19), April Rose Diaz (3:25:24), Nhe ann Barcena (3:27:19), and Vivian Avergonzado (3:24:25).
Joerge Andrade, meanwhile, was the fastest to complete the 42k race in the male category – dethroning last year’s titlist Jeson Agravante of Bacolod City who failed to finish the race.
Andrade clocked 2:39:34. Erick Panique followed with 2:42:10; Eduardo Buenavista, 2:43:34; Erinio Raquin, 2:44:34; and Jerald Zabala, 2:46:59.
Completing the men’s top 10 were Ritchell Laguido (2:49:17), Elmer Bartolo (2:49:25), Bryan Quiamco (2:50:16), John Rey Onifa (2:52:51), and Noel Tillor (2:54:39)./PN
