MANILA – Malacañang yesterday declared Nov. 8 as a special nonworking holiday in Tacloban City in commemoration of the fourth anniversary of super typhoon “Yolanda.”
“Yolanda” hit Visayas region in 2013 and left more than 6,000 people dead, 4.1 million people displaced and billions of pesos worth of properties destroyed.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Tacloban be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said in Proclamation No. 348 signed yesterday.
President Rodrigo Duterte did not attend the commemoration in Tacloban as he was abroad for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
Yesterday, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque urged the country to always remember the lessons “Yolanda” left.
“’Yolanda’ is a story of faith and hope that characterizes our people as it is an account of tapang at malasakit (courage and compassion) that we must demand from our leaders,” he said.
According to Roque, the government has been working for the revival of “Yolanda”-hit communities.
“We have rehabilitated seaport and airport facilities and classrooms,” he said.
“Our shelter assistance in Tacloban City is the most successful model in the Yolanda Permanent Housing Program, with the most number of resettlement houses occupied at 10,703 units from a total housing target of 14,433 houses,” he added./PN
