MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws extended its winning run in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball by defeating University of the Philippines Maroons 78-59 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ron Dennison led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Richard Escoto added 12 markers for Tamaraws, which moved to solo third place on Sunday with a 4-2 win-loss record.
Rookie Ibrahim Outarra finished with double-double 17 points and 13 rebounds while Juan Gomez De Llano added 16 for Maroons, which dropped to 3-2.
In the second game, Adamson University Falcons tied Maroons on fourth place after its lopsided 79-60 victory over University of the East Red Warriors, which remained winless.
Papi Sarr led the way with double-double 15 points and 16 rebounds while Sean Manganti contributed 10 points and eight boards for Falcons, which posted its second straight win.
Holding to a slim 18-14 lead at the end of the opening period, FEU waxed hot in the second quarter behind Prince Orizu, Hubert Cani and Arvin Tolentino for a 40-24 halftime lead.
Tamaraws continued its surge in the third period for a 50-26 advantage on a Kenneth Tuffin hit but Maroons began its fight-back to trim the deficit to as low as 10 points early in the final quarter.
FEU pulled away again on three straight triples from Dennison and Jasper Parker to build its largest lead 74-48 before Maroons made some late hits for the final score.
“It was a defensive game for us,” said Tamaraws head coach Olsen Racela. “First time namin this year to limit a team below 60 points. Iyon ang focus namin sa start of the game, to limit them defensively. Timing din na we caught them on an off-night.”/PN
