ILOILO City – NLEX Road Warriors center Asi Taulava and Phoenix Fuel Masters’ RJ Jazul will lead the opening of the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball Tournament today at the Barangay Katilingban Gym in Molo.

Taulava and Jazul, who were sent by the PBA through Flanax, will be giving inspirational messages during the opening program of the tournament, which has three categories namely: High School, Open and 40 and up.

The Filipino-Tongan Taulava, the oldest active player in the PBA right now at 44, rose to fame while playing for the Talk N Text, where he won his lone PBA title in 2003. He has since played for the Coca Cola Tigers, Meralco Bolts, Air 21 Express and the Road Warriors.

The 31-year-old Jazul, on the other hand, is one of the PBA’s deadliest outside shooters. His career breakout came when he was still with the Alaska Aces where he won his first PBA title in 2013.

Jazul, a standout from Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights in the NCAA, has also played for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, the Express and now with the Fuel Masters.

Competing in the high school category are Hua Siong College of Iloilo, Sun Yat Sen High School, Iloilo National High School, Iloilo City National High School, Jalandoni Memorial National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Sta. Clarita International High School, St. Roberts International Academy, and Centerphil Montessori Learning Center Inc.

Participating in the open category are Central Philippine University, St. Paul University Iloilo, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, and the University of San Agustin, while the 40 and up will have Double B, IFCBA, Iloilo Executive, Iloilo Pros, Iloilo Tuesday Club, MASA, and PISAI.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog, Vice Mayor Joe III Espinosa and the members of the Iloilo City Council are inviting everyone to watch the 1 p.m. opening today, part of the city’s grassroots sport program with the theme “Be in Sports, Not on Drugs.”/PN
