ILOILO City – An ice pick-wielding man stabbed a taxi driver at a beach resort in Barangay Sto. Niño Norte, Arevalo district then fled.
The stabbing happened around 12:30 a.m. yesterday at Welkins resort. Thirty-three-year-old driver Eric Sumpay of Barangay Balabag, Santa Barbara, Iloilo was taken to The Medical City for a wound on the chest.
As of this writing, the Arevalo police were still trying to identify the suspect’s identity. Investigators were reviewing recordings of security cameras within the crime scene’s vicinity.
Prior to the stabbing, Sumpay was binge drinking with two friends at the resort. They had a confrontation with the suspect’s group occupying another table, initial police investigation showed.
Around 12:30 a.m., Sumpay and companions called it a night and proceeded to his parked taxi, according to Police Officer 3 Rex Diaz of Arevalo.
All of a sudden, someone kicked the taxi’s rear. Sumpay, who was already inside the taxi, got out and checked what happened. A man with an ice pick attacked him then ran away./PN
