MANILA – After losing the first set, Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts pulled away to defeat Far Easter University and post its first victory in the Rebisco Volleyball League at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.
Thunderbolts – Alyssa Bertolano, Marianne Sotomil, Jeanny Padilla, Joan Doguna, and Shane Carmona – survived the Monday match against the much taller Lady Tamaraws 20-25, 25-22, 25-19.
Lady Tamaraws imposed its presence in the opening set, displaying booming spikes from Alexis Miner, Ann Goc and Lyann De Guzman to draw first blood.
But Thunderbolts was able to shake off the intimidation in the second and pulled off a close victory before handily taking the third against the scrambling FEU.
“This was our first time to play in an air-conditioned venue,” said Thunderbolts head coach Evelyn Aguillon. “Hindi ba sanay maglaro sa air-conditioned venue. Plus, na-intimidate kami.”
Tay Tung was scheduled to face next University of San Jose-Recoletos on Tuesday night, Holy Rosary College on Wednesday, De La Salle-Lipa on Thursday, and Angelicum Learning Center on Friday.
“To be honest, this was an unexpected win for us,” said Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice chairman for sports. “But I am glad that the players were able to overcome their intimidation. And as what I heard from those who saw the game, Manila is in shock.”
Meanwhile, powerhouse Hope Christian High School got valuable contributions from Antiqueña Irah Anika Jaboneta to score 25-20, 26-24 against University of Mindanao-Tagum./PN
