BACOLOD Tay Tung High School captured the girls’ volleyball title in the Visayas leg of the Batang Pinoy after beating St. John’s Institute 25-11, 25-8 on Thursday at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex in Dumaguete City.

Tay Tung Thunderbolts – bannered by veterans Shane Carmona, Annikha Cabasac and Kiesha Bedonia – surged to a double-digit lead early in the first and second sets before preventing SJI from coming close.

Thunderbolts moved on to the national finals along with five other athletes from Tay Tung, said the school’s Vice Chairman for Sports Jose Montalbo.

Earning a ticket to the national finals were Klyde Brehxler Montalbo (gold medalist, 2000m walkathon) and Ralph Joshua Bangoy (silver medalist, 4x400m relay).

On the distaff side, the following were heading to the finals: Antonette Jay Aguillon (silver medalist in 200m run, triple jump, and 4x100m and 4x400m relay); Ara Delotavo (gold medalist in 100m hurdles, silver in 4x400m and 4x100m relay, and bronze in 400m hurdles); and Stephany Malate (silver medalist in 4x100m and 4x400m relay).

Meanwhile, Western Visayas athletes clinched two golds in boxing courtesy of Flint Jara of Bago City, who defeated Leyte’s Archie Alao in flyweight, and Gideon Salazar of Antique, who outpointed Roland Agravante of Sipalay City in light flyweight.

In beach volleyball, Negros Occidental settled for silver medals in boys (Allen Teruel and Kian Zeth Acopio) and girls (Ashgan Bkheet and Myrtle Encanlar).

Teruel and Acopio of La Carlota City suffered a 17-21, 15-21 loss to Kenrick Genomo and Nino Jerome Mahilum of Cebu City, while Bkheet and Encanlar of Pontevedra bowed to Hannah Xyrah Cabansay and Nathalia Labiste of Cebu./PN
