Tay Tung spikers defend Montalbo tourney crown

BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts ruled the 4th Jose G. Montalbo Invitational Volleyball Tournament at their covered court.

Thunderbolts successfully defended its crown on Sunday after a 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 straight-set victory over Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in the finals.

Led by Alyssa Bertolano, Shane Carmona and Kiesha Bedonia, Thunderbolts took advantage of the loopholes in the defense of Magis Eagles to finish the match in three sets.

Bertolano was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and Best Opposite Spiker while Carmona bagged the Best Scorer and Best Open Spiker awards.

Newcomer Erika Deloria took home the Best Server plum while Kiesha Bedonia was hailed the Best Middle Blocker.

“We are seeing progress with our team right now,” said Thunderbolts assistant coach Biboy Calamba. “Our new players and the old ones are slowly getting their jive together on the court and that is a good sign for us.”

After sweeping the group matches, Thunderbolts ousted Bacolod Tay Tung Aspirants’ Squad 25-11, 25-16 in the quarterfinals before edging La Carlota Selection 25-15, 25-16 in the semifinals.

Other Thunderbolts members are Aurea Claudette Alvero, Annikha Cabasac, Katherine Shane Cortez, Dya Mejos, Kathleen Kate Tan, Beatrice Decena, Hannah Quanico, Joan Marie Monares, and Rhean Almendralejo./PN
