SAN JOSE, Antique – Children should be taught about fire prevention and safety, according to the provincial fire marshal.
To avoid getting hurt, they should learn how to use a fire exit or when to leave during a blaze, said Fire Chief Inspector Crossbee Gumowang.
“Sometimes, it is challenging to teach adults,” Gumowang noted in a news conference. “But with children, we must be determined (in teaching them) until we inculcate in them the value of fire safety.”
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is observing the Fire Prevention Month this March.
The theme — “Buhay at Ari-arian ay Pahalagahan, Ibayong Pag-iingat sa Sunog sa Sariling Pamamahay Simulan” — means fire prevention starts at home, and everyone, including children, should take part, said Gumowang.
Households and establishments should have fire extinguishers, and family members or building occupants must know how and when to use them, the BFP said.
A certified electrician must check wirings for overloading or “octopus” connections, said the bureau. “Faulty wiring,” grass fire and fireworks caused fires in Antique in recent months, the BFP has reported.
Other ways to prevent fires, the bureau said, include:
* Unplug electrical appliances when leaving the house. Switch off the main valve of the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tank when not in use.
* Store water and sand to be used in case of fire, but make sure stored water are properly covered to prevent mosquito breeding.
* Never smoke cigarettes in bed or throw cigar and cigarette butts into the waste basket. Crush the cigarette thoroughly before discarding it.
* When smoking, always use an ashtray. Keep matches and lighters away from the reach of children.
* Do not leave the stove while cooking. Do not keep flammable substances in the kitchen. Check the kitchen before going to sleep.
* Do not leave a burning candle unattended.
* Avoid illegal electrical connections.
Fire officers in Antique also hold forums on fire prevention in communities and inspect fire safety in houses and establishments. (PIA/PN)
