ILOILO City – The teacher who injured her seven-year-old Grade 2 pupil with a stick at Pili Elementary School in Ajuy, Iloilo was charged with violating the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.
The complaint against Herma Gonzales was filed yesterday at the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office by the pupil’s mother, Rhemia Napulac of Barangay Pili, Ajuy.
The pupil was treated for a wound on his forehead at the Sara District Hospital.
Aside from the court case, Gonzales also faces an administrative investigation at the Department of Education.
Gonzales could not be reached for comment as of this writing. But according to Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, Ajuy police chief, she told the boy’s parents it was not her intention to hurt her pupil and she apologized.
The apology had not appeased the boy’s parents. According to the police, the boy appeared to have been traumatized by what happened and was scared to return to school.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. on June 21.
The boy’s classmate seated behind him was not paying attention to the class but playing with a pair of scissors, said Sustento.
Gonzales reproached the boy’s classmate but this other boy ignored the chiding. Irritated, she threw her stick to this stubborn pupil but unfortunately it was Napulac’s son who got hit./PN
