Technical glitch causes blackout in Panay Island

ILOILO City – A technical problem at private power producer Global Business Power (GBP) caused a Panay Island-wide brownout on Sunday night.

GBP’s power generating units 1, 2 and 3 in Barangay Ingore, La Paz district here tripped off simultaneously around 6:33 p.m., according to the initial information from the company.

In an interview yesterday, Engineer Petronilo Madrid, GBP first vice president, said they were still determining the cause of the trip off.

“May mga information or data na kaming nakuha. We will analyze them kung saan nagmula. Hindi pa namin masabi or ma-rule out kung saan nanggaling,” Madrid told Panay News.

This was the first time GBP’s power generating units simultaneously tripped off, said a puzzled Madrid.

“Kung na-trip ‘yung planta, nadamay ba ‘yung system? Or nagmula sa system at papunta sa planta?” he wondered.

The brownout lasted for four to five hours in some areas in Panay Island but in this city, the power was restored immediately.

Meanwhile, based on the monitoring of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines NGCP, grid disturbance resulted in the loss of power affecting Cebu, Negros, Panay and Guimaras islands at 6:19 p.m. on Sunday.

The power was restored around 8:52 p.m./PN
