BACOLOD City – The city government created a technical working group that will focus on reviewing the proposed extension of port operations of the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco).
Mayor Evelio Leonardia signed on Oct. 10 a local executive order that directs the formation of the technical group.
According to Leonardia, the group will be tasked to evaluate the proposal that the management of Bredco submitted.
The assessment will help the city government determine the effects of Bredco’s extension of the port operation for another 25 years.
The technical working group is composed of Atty. Edward Joseph Cuansing as chairperson and Atty. Marian Theresa Malan, Engineer Nestor Velez, Arlene Memoria, Marivic Canada, Jesie Gico, and Stela Rayos as members.
Leonardia said Bredco formally informed the city government that it wants to extend its port operations through a letter dated Oct. 4.
On March 16, 1995, Bredco and the city government entered a comprehensive revised reclamation agreement.
The agreement was signed by then mayor Alfredo Montelibano Sr.
Paragraph 5 Condition 9 of the agreement stated that the Bredco has the right to operate and manage the port for a period of 25 years.
The city government granted to Bredco the option to operate and manage the port for another 25 years, which will be subject to negotiation between the parties, the agreement further stated.
Leonardia said Bredco also submitted a study on the socio-economic impact of their port operations not only to the city but to its neighboring towns and cities in Negros Occidental.
“There is a need to evaluate the proposal. The contents may be considered as component items of negotiation with Bredco,” Leonardia added.
For his part, Councilor Renecito Novero said Bredco is giving P800,000 per year to the city as a compensation package stated in 1995 agreement./PN
