Teenager rules Iloilo Strait swimming challenge

ILOILO City – A 14-year-old lad from Bacolod City dominated the 2.5-kilometer swimming challenge from this city to Guimaras province.

Lance Jero Tacsagon, an incoming Grade 9 student of Negros Occidental High School, negotiated the rough waters of the Iloilo Strait in 42 minutes yesterday.

Seven minutes after Tacsagon reached the finish line at the roll on, roll off wharf in Barangay Hoskyn, Jordan, Guimaras 18-year-old April Jane Eslabon of Iloilo City finished second.

A Grade 11 student at St. Paul University, Eslabon crossed the Iloilo Strait in 49 minutes.

The third placer was a 32-year-old swimmer from La Paz, Iloilo City – Alxandra Ganzon. She reached the finish line 50 minutes after taking off from Fort San Pedro.

The Police Regional office 6 (PRO-6) organized this “swim for a cause” to raise funds for policemen wounded or killed in line of duty.

“I’m happy to reach the finish line despite the strong water current. I did this for my men.  I congratulate all the swimmers, too,” said Binag.

The race gathered a total of participants of 40, 14 of them police officers.

Of the 40 swimmers, six were females and the youngest was 13-year-old Ezrah Beatrice Campo of Bacolod City. She was one of the Top 10 finishers.

Tacsagon and Eslabon both competed in the Palarong Pambansa swimming competition, too./PN
