BACOLOD City – Task Force Kasanag (TFK) has vowed to help fight the proliferation of fake news, according to its national commander John Chiong.
Chiong attended a forum titled “Upholding Press Freedom and Supporting Campaigns versus Fake News” at Rothman Hotel in Malate, Manila last week.
Several media advocates organized the forum, wherein Chiong read a pledge of support.
“TFK supports the media because we, a civil society group, believe that the media is our partner in bringing help to the indigents in exposing and fighting corruption and criminalities,” Chiong said.
Veteran journalist IndayEspina-Varona, former chairwoman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and Ariel Sebellino, executive director of the Philippine Press Institute, were present during the seminar.
“We at TFK decided to openly declare our support in upholding the freedom of the press and to counter fake news to ensure that the citizens will not fall as victims to news or reports that are not true,” Chiong added.
The TFK head also plans to hold a turnover ceremony of their manifesto of support to media advocate groups this month.
Chiong said they are also finalizing the schedules of similar forums against fake news in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Espina-Varona said she was glad that the TFK expressed its support for press freedom and the fight against fake news.
Sebellino hopes that the forums that the TFK will conduct will help in defending the press through its wide reach./PN
