NEWS ON the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit is all over. But  many still have no idea how the Philippines benefits from it.
ASEAN aims to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership. It aims to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community.
ASEAN also promotes regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region, and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
When ASEAN activities are held in a certain country, these aim to collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade, including the study of the problems of international commodity trade, the improvement of their transportation and communications facilities, and the raising of the living standards of their people.
Why should we care about ASEAN? What are some of these benefits?
First, the ASEAN Economic Community aims for lower cost of living. It aims to minimize the cost of food and other goods to maximize the purchasing power of people. Goods and services will be easily accessible.
Second, it will allow us to have more options and choices. How? The country will have more service providers. This means people will have easier access to transportation and medical care. Investments on infrastructures such as ports, airports and roads will push down prices.
Third, some of us may work and study abroad. There will be fast assistance as to the visas and employment for students and professionals. This way, a lot of new job opportunities are created. There will be more solid regulations and programs for overseas Filipino workers.
These are just some of the simple benefits of the ASEAN. But I believe these will bring a better Philippines. We will have more opportunities when it comes to goods and services, travel and job prospects.
