RECENTLY, the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided Mar-a-Lago, home of former US. President Donald Trump, and acquired several documents from his personal safe, presumably because he wasn’t supposed to have them.
Needless to say, it has caused quite a drama in the U.. and the raid is now causing an uproar in the American political scene.
Even at this time, the situation is still ongoing, and there is a lot of information being thrown left and right (many of which are probably untrue) so it’s best to wait until we reach some sort of conclusion. For now, though, I can say this…
The United States’ political institutions are being eroded simply because a lot of powerful forces are afraid of Trump and his supporters.
In my opinion, the raid was carried out to prevent Trump from running in 2024, and possibly to undermine his political allies in the coming midterms. But the raid could have been due to other reasons. No one’s sure at this point.
What is certain is that the raid has only caused further fissures in the US. As far as Trump supporters are concerned, Trump has become their martyr.
Independents, too, are generally against the raid. Only the left supports the raid, and as far as I can see, even they are doing it only out of political loyalty.
To understand the seriousness of the raid on Mar-a-Lago, imagine if the National Bureau of Investigation (with or without the knowledge of President Marcos) had raided a former a President’s home because he or she had retained some documents from the time they were still in office.
Such a raid will cause an uproar, both domestically and internationally. People will say it’s Martial Law all over again.
And assuming the charge about Trump and the documents is true, there are other ways to acquire such documents that don’t require a raid; just a team of lawyers and bureaucrats.
But rather than doing that, the FBI chose the theatricality of a raid. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing would turn into a political mess that could further destabilize the United States./PN
