BACOLOD City — Three public schools in this city have shifted to the Alternative Learning System (ALS) after sustaining significant damages from Typhoon “Tino.”
The affected schools are Bacolod City National High School (BCNHS), Emiliano Lizares National High School (ELNHS), and A.L. Jayme Elementary School (ALJES).
According to records from the Department of Education (DepEd) – Bacolod City Division, based on data from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) as of November 12, a total of 38 schools in the city incurred major and minor damages.
Due to the extent of the damage, DepEd decided to suspend face-to-face classes in the three schools.
Detailed reports indicate that BCNHS sustained 20 major and 27 minor damages to its classrooms, while ELNHS suffered five5 major and 28 minor classroom damages in addition to two damaged comfort rooms. ALJES incurred 19 major and 15 minor classroom damages.
DepEd spokesperson RJ Paglumotan said the department is consolidating data and exploring funding options for rehabilitation. He noted that while the department has maintenance funds, these are already allocated for pre-existing projects, and the fiscal year is nearing its end.
“May ara emergency fund pero I don’t know kon cover ina nga funds para dira,” Paglumotan said, referring to emergency funds for disaster response.
The shift to alternative learning comes after more than a week of suspended face-to-face classes due to bad weather conditions caused by Typhoon “Tino.”/PN
