THE brawl during the 2018 WVRAA Meet secondary boys football finals between Iloilo and Negros Occidental should compel match organizers to set up tighter security every time the two teams face off.

I was talking to a friend, Watchmen Daily Journal sports editor Jerome Galunan, and he said the Philippine Football League (PFL) should seriously consider the incident when Kaya Iloilo FC meets Ceres Negros FC in a match.

“As we all know naman, mainit talaga kapag naglalaban sa football ang Iloilo at Negros Occidental. Whatever league – mapa-professional, elementary, high school, or college,” Galunan said.

“Kaya iyong nangyari should be a warning sa PFL,” he said. “We don’t expect the players from Kaya or Ceres [to fight] dahil magkakaibigan naman ang mga iyan, and most of them parehas ng pinanggalingan, but the fans, siyempre may bragging rights diyan.”

Galunan said that while he was not blaming the Department of Education Region 6, the regional office “should have known better … lalo pa at championship iyong sa WVRAA Meet.”

Galunan also agreed with me that there should be a “neutral” referee. In the WVRAA Meet, Supresencia – an Ilonggo and sometimes team manager of Team Iloilo – was assigned to officiate.

“Siyempre mas makakabuti kung neutral referee,” said Galunan. “’Di ba mas maiiwasan sana ang doubts?”

Galunan added: “Football is a good sport, and Iloilo and Negros Occidental love that sport. It would be better if their games are well-officiated para naman ma-enjoy ng mga Ilonggo at Negrense iyong laban whatever the outcome.”

Members of a religious sect in the country want to kick out one of its popular members – an upstart Filipino-foreign PBA player – for violating one of the group’s rules.

It is not the frequent absence of the PBA player to the sect’s twice-a-week mass that irks the members but his having a relationship with a girl from the outside.

Ika nga, right move.”/PN
