Time to wake up: A prayer against corruption, a call to conscience

THIS ISN’T just a prayer — it’s a wake-up call for the whole country.

Cardinal Jose Advincula has called on the Catholic Church in Manila to pray the Oratio Imperata Against Corruption. Every 8 p.m., church bells ring across the city — not just as a routine sound, but as a reminder that something is wrong in our country and we need to fix it.

“Loving God means loving our country.” Faith and patriotism go hand in hand. If we truly believe in God, we have to stand up against lies, theft, and abuse. Praying isn’t enough. Voting isn’t enough. We must take part — by speaking out, protesting, asking questions, and exposing the truth. As the Bible says, “Expose the works of darkness.” (Ephesians 5:11)

Corruption isn’t just a problem in government — it’s a moral crisis that hurts the soul of our nation. It hurts the poor, the voiceless, and those who depend on government fairness.

But there’s still hope. Hope in prayer, hope in action, hope in coming together. Every bell, every prayer, every brave act shines a light in the dark.

Pope Francis reminds us that politics is an act of love. So the Church urges us: love your country by standing for the truth. This is a bold prayer with clear purpose and dignity.

If we truly care about God, we must also care about our country. If we are truly patriotic, we must fight corruption.

This call isn’t just from the Church. Business groups like the Philippine Business for Social Progress and watchdogs like Transparency International Philippines are also pushing for honesty in government, transparency in how public money is spent, and protection for whistleblowers. Young people, schools, and civic organizations are joining the call for values, responsibility, and action.

Right now, faith and non-faith voices are coming together, ringing the alarm. The bells are ringing. Our conscience is waking up. It’s time for the nation to act.

In every prayer, every protest, every truth told — there is hope. This is the start of a moral revolution. (totingbunye2000@gmail.com)/PN
