MANILA – TNT KaTropa squandered a 21-point lead before hanging on for a 113-107 victory over Meralco Bolts in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
After seeing its lead whittled down to 107-105, KaTropa came up with clutch conversions from import Glen Rice Jr. and Jayson Castro to preserve their win.
Rice led the way with 32 points, allowing TNT to keep its run for a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals alive and improve to a 5-3 win-loss record.
Castro added 27 markers, including three 3-point conversions, while Kelly Williams contributed 16 points for KaTropa, which remained shorthanded in the absence of injured RR Garcia and Kris Rosales.
KaTropa jumped to an early 20-9 advantage behind hits by Castro, Rice and Roger Pogoy. Bolts rallied to within a single digit but TNT pulled away to 63-46 at the half on hits by Castro and Rice.
KaTropa’s lead went up to as high as 21 points early in the third frame after a Rice hit but Bolts went on a huge run to cut the deficit 89-84 at the end of the period on conversions by Baser Amer and import Allen Durham.
TNT managed to increase the lead anew to double figures early in the final quarter, but Bolts made its last stand behind Amer and Durham to come to within 105-107 before KaTropa went on a 6-2 finishing run to seal the win.
Durham finished with 39 points while Amer contributed 21 markers for Meralco, which slid to 5-2./PN
