SAN JOSE, Antique – The annual Binirayan Festival opened at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park with a torch and trumpet parade and a fireworks display.
The festival is a recollection of the docking and settlement of 10 Malayan datus in what is now Barangay Malandog, Hamtic town. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Culture and Greatness.”
A reenactment of the historical event was held at the Malandog shorelines on Monday afternoon.
The theatrical presentation had performers in Malayan and ati costumes. It aimed to showcase the Antiqueños’ noble beginnings and colorful history and heritage.
Gov. Rhodora Cadiao, Vice Gov. Edgar Denosta and other provincial and municipal government officials led the festival opening. Lin-ay kang Antique candidates were presented, too.
Scheduled activities for Dec. 27 were drum and glockenspiel competition (elementary and high school), rafflesia children dance completion, tricycle lights contest, and Lin-ay kang Antique Talent Night and festival costume contest.
Today, Dec. 28, there will be a wreath-laying at the Evelio B. Javier statue at the EBJ Freedom Park, Binirayan Football Festival at the Binirayan Sports Complex, Globe Village at the EBJ Freedom Park, 1st Binirayan Motocross in Tobias Fornier, Bugal kang Antique Awards, and Rampatadyong Fashion Night at EBJ Freedom Park.
On Dec. 29 there will be a Philippine Red Cross bloodletting, Binirayan mass, Tumandok nga Sipal arnis exhibition and boxing tournament, and Lin-ay kang Antique Coronation Night at EBJ gymnasium.
Moreover, on Dec. 30, the Grand Binirayan Day celebration, Rizal Day celebration, Parada kang Lahi, float parade contest, Malay-Ati competition, Karsadyahan (street-dancing/merrymaking, and the closing ceremony and awarding of prizes with fireworks display at EBJ Freedom Park will be held. (PIA/PN)
