ILOILO City – Police in Aklan province were finding difficulty identifying the perpetrators behind the torching of heavy equipment in Banga town.
No witness was willing to testify, lamented Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapaz, Aklan Police Provincial Office director.
Manlapaz was not discounting the possibility that the New People’s Army (NPA) staged it as an atrocity related to Labor Day.
Unidentified motorcycle-riding men burned a vibrator roller and a grader parked on Banga-Libacao provincial road in Sitio Ilawod, Barangay Daguitan, Banga.
The heavy equipment were being used for the paving of the provincial road from Barangay Polo, Banga to the Libacao-Banga boundary.
The P148-million road project was being funded by the World Bank under the Philippine Rural Development Project with the Department of Agriculture and the provincial government of Aklan.
“It’s not far that they (NPA) did it, but we have no witness that could pin them down,” said Manlapaz. “The construction company that owned the equipment have not received any demand or extortion letter from the rebels.”
Neither was there any conflict between the BSP and Company, Inc. management and its employees, Manlapaz said.
The burned heavy equipment cost around P7.7 million, according to BSP and Company, Inc.
Police found pieces of firewood soaked in paint near the heavy equipment.
The grader was destroyed, while the vibrator roller was partially burned, they said./PN
