SAN JOSE, Antique – This capital town is building a new P34.8-million cemetery in Binirayan Hills, Barangay 8 for people who will die from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Construction is ongoing in a 6,000-square meter lot owned by the local government. However, the remains of four COVID-19 victims have already been interred in niches first to be completed last month.

“Because of the urgent request of the families, we allowed the entombment on the finished niches,” said Darcy Bungay, Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development Officer (MEEDO).

Once completed, the COVID cemetery will have a chapel, 59 mausoleum lots, 97 family plots or below-the-ground burial plots, and 1,446 niches.

Construction started in February 2021 and may be completed next year.

While originally intended for residents of the municipality, the local government will also accept non-residents if the need for interment is urgent.

The new graveyard is adjacent to the town cemetery in Barangay Bantayan with 2,005 niches that are already full.

The municipal government provides free niches for the dead of poor residents. (PNA)
