MANILA – Transport groups are seeking a P2 increase in the minimum fare in jeepneys.

Pasang Masda, Fejodap, Altodap, Acto, and 1-Utak will file a petition at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“Our petition is in preparation for the impending increase in the prices of petroleum products,” Pasang Masda president Obet Martin said.

“We are now encountering an increase in the prices of our spare parts, like wheels, whereas these are imported,” he added. “The increase would help in the needs of the drivers.”

But several commuters are against the plan of the transport groups.

“Our salaries have not increased. An P8 fare is high enough for commuters. And they want to raise it further to P10. How about us?” said Abigail delos Reyes.

“We value every P1 we have. Increasing the minimum fare to P10 is an added burden,” Jonalyn Rojas said.

“It’s unfair to commuters like us. We have a very small salary,” Rose Arguelles said.

The National Council for Commuters Safety and Protection initially agreed to a fare hike but noted it should not go beyond a peso.

Meanwhile, transport groups Piston and the Stop and Go Coalition are set to hold transport strikes to protest the government’s jeepney modernization plan.

Piston will hold its two-day transport strike from Sept. 20 to 21. For Stop and Go Coalition, it will be from the 25th to the 26th.

They insist on not accepting the loan the government offers jeepney drivers and operators who will be affected by the modernization. (UNTV)
