ILOILO City – Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara has garnered support from local officials following his appointment as the new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
They believe his extensive legislative experience, particularly in education-related policies, makes him a suitable candidate to lead the department.
“He has an excellent work ethic. He understands the needs of the LGUs regarding education,” said Mayor Mayor Treñas.
The mayor said he had worked with Angara when they were both members of the House of Representatives. “He has my full support,” he added.
For her part, Cong. Julienne Baronda lauded Angara on his appointment, adding that President Marcos picked a “qualified, experienced, and visionary leader to shepherd the Department of Education into the Bagong Pilipinas.”
“I extend my felicitations to Sen. Sonny Angara on his appointment as Secretary of the Department of Education,” said Baronda.
The legislator said she knew Angara even during her stint as youth council chairperson and before he became a senator.
“I know very well, too, how he values education as a platform to help people uplift their lives. I have no doubt he will champion initiatives that would improve our education,” said Baronda.
President Marcos Jr. named Angara as the new DepEd secretary effective July 19.
Angara, whose Senate term was supposed to end in 2025, will replace Vice President Sara Duterte, who resigned as DepEd secretary last June 19./PN
