MANILA – “Anti-poor,” was how Iloilo City’s Rep. Jerry Treñas described the Department of Finance’s proposal to remove the value-added tax exemptions for senior citizens.
He also disagreed with its plan to impose excise tax on petroleum products, Treñas said Sunday.
“This DOF proposal is a complete opposite of what President (Rodrigo) Duterte wants for our people,” the Ilonggo lawmaker said.
According to him, scrapping the VAT and raising the excise tax on the sale of fuel will not lead to increased tax revenues for the government.
What the country needs instead is an “efficient tax collection system,” Treñas said.
Treñas also urged Sec. Carlos Dominguez to establish “innovative programs” that would encourage more Filipinos to be conscientious in their payment of right taxes.
“One reason why some Filipinos are not so compliant in paying their taxes is because of the hassle that they have to go through just to file their income tax documents,” he said.
The Finance department was also advised to order the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Bureau of Customs to ensure that tax payment process is convenient and hassle-free.
While he opposed the proposed removal of VAT exemption and imposition of excise tax on oil products, Treñas said he supports DOF’s plans to adjust tax brackets to inflation, the lowering of personal income tax rates to 25 percent except for the high income earners, and the shift to a modified gross system in tax computation./PN
