BACOLOD City — A tricycle driver was killed while his wife was injured in a three-vehicle collision along Araneta Street in Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City, early Friday, October 9.
The accident occurred at around 12:45 a.m. in front of a gasoline station and involved a pickup truck, a tricycle and a traditional public utility jeepney.
Police identified the fatality as alias “Rog” and the injured woman as alias “Lilian,” both of legal age and residents of Barangay Sum-ag.
Initial investigation by the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Traffic Enforcement Unit showed that the pickup, driven by alias “Rodney,” 33, a member of the Philippine Coast Guard, was traveling northbound along Araneta Street when it allegedly struck the tricycle traveling ahead of it.
The pickup then crashed into the rear portion of the jeepney, which was also heading northbound along the same road.
Investigators said heavy rainfall may have contributed to the collision.
The tricycle driver sustained fatal injuries to his head and other parts of his body. Responding personnel from the Bacolod City Accident Response Unit found him without signs of life.
His wife suffered injuries and abrasions and was taken to South Bacolod General Hospital for medical treatment.
All three vehicles sustained damage in the successive collisions.
Police said the Coast Guard member was taken into the custody of Police Station 9 pending further investigation.
Reckless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor were listed as the indicated causes of the accident, although police said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation./PN
