ILOILO City – A total of 322 poor, unwed couples will finally tie the knot in two separate mass weddings today – one in this city and another in Miagao, Iloilo.
Here, 122 couples will exchange “I dos” at Plaza Libertad at 3 p.m.
This Valentine’s Day mass wedding initiated by the city government’s Civil Registrar’s Office and Red Ladies of Iloilo City will be officiated by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
“Couples living together but not married find it hard to enroll their children in school because they cannot present birth certificates. Before the parents can get their children’s birth certificates, they need to present a marriage contract first,” explained Chytchymua Rejaba, president of Red Ladies.
The wedding is free of charge. Mabilog is footing the bill for the couples’ rings.
“We will let the couples experience what a real wedding is,” said Rejaba.
Meanwhile, 200 pairs from the southern town of Miagao will join the free mass wedding organized by the Home Mutual Development Fund (HMDF) or Pag-IBIG Fund.
The civil wedding ceremony dubbed “I Do, I Do Araw ng Pag-ibig” will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Miagao Cultural Hall, according Pag-IBIG Member Service Officer Mark Ken Carmelita.
The ceremony will be held simultaneous with other key cities and municipalities in the country identified by Pag-IBIG.
The annual mass wedding is part of the corporate social responsibility of Pag-IBIG.
During the wedding, couples will be encouraged to enroll with the Pag-IBIG Fund “for future needs and their children’s security,” said Carmelita.
Lucky couples will have a chance to win raffle prizes. These include, among others, home appliances and kitchen wares.
Last year, the Pag-IBIG mass wedding was held in Isla de Gigantes, Carles town. (PNA)
