THE UNIVERSITY of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) reached the finals of the Mayor Braeden John Q. Biron Inter-Collegiate Football Invitational Tournament 2019 after beating their semifinals foe on Monday at the Barotac Nuevo Football Field.
Jason Juayang drained the marginal goal in the second half as the UNO-R ousted Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School-Palaro, 1-0, in the knockout semifinals round.
Both teams struggled with the ball possession in the opening half until UNO-R’s Juayang broke the tie at the 52nd minute. The Barotac Nuevo had several opportunities to tie the game but was denied by the UNO-R’s defense.
University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, meanwhile, clinched the other championship slot after scoring a 2-0 victory over the NCAA men’s football runner-up Arellano University Chiefs.
Silas Valladolid-Collins opened the scoring for the Tigers with a conversion at the 10th minute. The UST’s lead was doubled 10 minutes later with another hit from Daniel Martey.
The gold medal match between UNO-R and the Growling Tigers is being played as of presstime last night./PN
