ILOILO City – Inclement weather brought by tropical storm “Urduja” suspended the trips of sea vessels and stranded passengers at ports in Western Visayas.
“Urduja” brought scattered rains across the region as it made landfall in Samar province in Eastern Visayas yesterday.
Public Storm Signal No. 2 was raised over Aklan, Capiz, northern Antique, and northern Iloilo, according to the state weather bureau.
On the other hand, the rest of Iloilo and Antique, the island province of Guimaras, and Negros Occidental were placed under Signal No. 1.
Sea travel over the seaboards of areas with storm warning signals was risky, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, or Pagasa.
Sea trip cancelations yesterday affected four roll-on, roll-off vessels from Dumangas port bound for Bacolod City; four fast crafts from Lapuz port, also bound for Bacolod City; and one commercial vessel from Fort San Pedro bound for Cebu City, said Ramil Palabrica, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard-Iloilo.
Boat trips in northern Iloilo have been canceled for three days already, Palabrica said.
They included trips from Ajuy town to Victorias City, Negros Occidental, and from Estancia town to Masbate province.
Boats playing the Iloilo-Guimaras route and vice versa were allowed to continue.
“The weather [in Iloilo City and Guimaras] was still manageable, but we will cancel these short-distance trips once the weather gets more intense,” Palabrica said.
He advised the operators of boats that were allowed to travel to ensure the safety of their passengers by providing them lifejackets and making sure their engines were functioning.
But the Coast Guard official warned small fishers against venturing out into the sea as “Urduja” brings strong winds and waves.
Meanwhile, no flight at the Iloilo International Airport has been canceled as of Saturday morning, said Art Parreño, terminal supervisor for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines-Iloilo.
Other areas placed under Signal No. 2 as of 8 o’clock last night were northern Samar, Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao Island, Romblon, and Cuyo Islands.
Signal No. 1 was also hoisted in northern Negros Oriental, northern Cebu, Leyte, eastern Samar, the rest of Samar, southern Quezon, Marinduque, southern Occidental Mindoro, southern Oriental Mindoro, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Burias Island, and northern Palawan including the Calamian Group of Islands.
