MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses came back from two sets down to score a 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12 win over the National University Lady Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
With the victory, the Golden Tigresses ended the elimination round at third place with a 9-5 win-loss slate and will have a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the semis against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers.
This marks the Golden Tigresses’ first Final Four stint since Season 74, when the team was still led by the likes of Ilongga Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Maika Ortiz and Rhea Dimaculangan.
Facing a 0-2 set deficit, the Golden Tigresses held a slim 16-13 lead in the third set before pulling to a 20-15 lead on a hit by Mary Pacres. The Lady Bulldogs rallied to within 24-22 before the Golden Tigresses ended it with an Ennajie Laure hit.
The Golden Tigresses went on a strong start in the fourth for a 16-8 lead but the Lady Bulldogs rallied back to tie the score at 18-all. However, crucial errors by Lady Bulldogs’ Jorelle Singh allowed the Golden Tigresses to force a fifth set.
After an exchange of points by Golden Tigresses’ Laure and Lady Bulldogs’ Jaja Santiago for a 6-all score. The Golden Tigresses surged to an 8-6 lead on a conversion by Patricia Francisco.
Two more points by Francisco and a power hit by Cherry Rondina put the Golden Tigresses on top 11-8. The Lady Bulldogs came to within 13-12 but consecutive digs by Rondina and Pacres clinched the match for the Golden Tigresses.
“Di basta basta sumuko both teams. Buwenas lang din kami, tyinaga namin hanggang dulo,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes. “Ngayong nasa Final Four na kami, gusto na naming ituloy tuloy.”
Meanwhile, the UST Tiger Spikers failed to duplicate the feat of their women’s counterparts after suffering a 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 loss to fellow Final Four-bound Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws./PN
