MANILA – Sen. Joel Villanueva is pushing for the creation of a hospital for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents.
Villanueva’s Senate Bill No. (SBN) 1282 seeks to establish the Bagong Bayaning Filipino Hospital in the National Capital Region.
“We want to recognize all the efforts and sacrifices of our modern-day heroes who have worked hard not only to provide a better living for the families, but also for their contribution to the national economy,” Villanueva said.
The 2015 Survey on Overseas Filipinos said that there are over 2 million migrant workers between April 1, 2015 and September 30, 2015.
During this period, they brought the total cash remittances to P180.3 billion, the report said.
“The personal remittances of our migrant workers strengthened the account position of the country, enlarged the middle class and spawned microenterprises in the countryside. It would be nothing short of a noble deed for the government to take care of our OFWs by providing them quality healthcare services,” the senator said.
SBN 1282 also directs regional hospitals to establish a ward for these workers to provide them their needed medical care.
Each ward shall contain at least 50 beds, the proposal said.
“As bagong bayani, our OFWs deserve more benefits, especially, access to a complete and quality health care. The State policy to provide social services and adequate health care to OFWs rightly justifies a stronger thrust towards the establishment of a Bagong Bayaning Filipino Hospital in the country,” Villanueva ended./PN
