BORACAY – Sen. Cynthia Villar inspected this famed beach destination hours before a public hearing on environmental law violations in the island yesterday.
Villar, chairwoman of the Senate committee on environment, inspected about three resorts for their compliance with the 30-meter no-build easement zone from the shore and their connection to the sewage treatment plant.
After visiting a resort which was given a notice of violation for encroaching the easement zone, Environment regional director Jim O Sampulna assured Villar that a portion of the resort will be removed soon.
Villar also inspected the treatment plant of the Boracay Island Water Company, the material recovery facility of the island in Sitio Bung-aw, Barangay Manoc-manoc, and the wetland area of the island to check the storm water impounded area.
Senators Loren Legarda, Nancy Binay, Joel Villanueva, and Miguel Zubiri joined Villar in yesterday’s public hearing, which was also attended by stakeholders such as resort owners and residents.
Villanueva last month sought an investigation on the issuance of environmental compliance certificates to several establishments in Boracay despite reported violations of environmental laws.
Officials of the environment, tourism and interior and local government departments on Thursday held an aerial inspection of the island.
These moves after President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to close the island if its environmental problems remain unfixed within six months. (With a report from ABS-CBN/PN)
