MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio’s legal team has filed its opposition before the Supreme Court, pushing back against the House of Representatives’ attempt to overturn the dismissal of her impeachment case.
Atty. Michael Poa, one of Duterte-Carpio’s lawyers, confirmed on Tuesday that their camp had already submitted its comment on the House’s motion for reconsideration.
“In deference to the sub judice rule and out of respect for the judicial process, we will not be granting media interviews or issuing further statements at this time,” Poa said.
The House, through the Office of the Solicitor General, earlier urged the high court to set aside its ruling that voided the impeachment complaint against the Vice President.
The Supreme Court struck down the case last month, citing the one-year bar rule and Duterte-Carpio’s right to due process.
While the ruling allowed her to stay in office, the Court clarified that she was not exonerated and that another impeachment case may still be filed beginning February 6, 2026.
The House impeached Duterte-Carpio on Feb. 5, 2025 charging her with betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft, and other high crimes.
The Senate, however, voted 19-4-1 on August 6 to archive the articles of impeachment.
Duterte-Carpio earlier dismissed the complaint as a mere “scrap of paper” and entered a not guilty plea.
Several lawmakers, civic groups, and religious leaders have since joined calls for the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling on the impeachment case./PN
