ILOILO City – The overall livestock production in Western Visayas dropped in the second quarter of 2025, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority Region 6 (PSA-6).
PSA data showed that carabao production was estimated at 1,847 metric tons (MT) from April to June – an 8.8 percent decrease from 2,024 MT recorded in the same quarter in 2024.
A 13.5 percent drop was also noted in cattle production, or 482 MT less than the output in last year’s second quarter.
Hog production likewise declined by 13.2 percent, or from 14,327 MT to only 12,440 MT, while goat output fell to 719 MT, marking a 4.5 percent drop.
In terms of livestock slaughtered across the region’s slaughterhouses in the second quarter, the number also shrank.
PSA said about 3,694 heads of carabao were slaughtered, or 31.3 percent lower than last year’s number in the same period.
The number of slaughtered cattle was recorded at 9,311 heads – 12.9 percent lower compared to 2024.
Hog slaughtering also went down by 23.2 percent compared to the previous year and the number of goats slaughtered dropped by 8.5 percent.
Meanwhile, Iloilo contributes the largest share to the region’s livestock inventories as of July 1, 2025:
* carabao – 44.9 percent, or 57,998 heads out of the total 129,223 heads;
* cattle – 31.3 percent (45,808 heads out of 146,375 heads);
* swine – 32.8 percent (85,547 heads of the region’s 260,776 heads);
* goat – 46.0 percent (70,589 heads out of 153,583 heads).
Antique and Capiz followed as key contributors with the former accounting for 22.7 percent of the carabao inventory, 35.7 percent of the cattle inventory, 32.0 percent of the swine inventory, and 17.1 percent of the goat inventory, and the latter holding 15.4 percent for carabao, 17.0 percent share for cattle, 15.7 percent for swine inventory, and 22.2 percent for goat.
PSA data further showed that poultry and eggs production increased in the second quarter of this year, except for duck.
Chicken production grew by 8.6 percent, reaching 24,626 MT, while chicken egg production rose by 1.6 percent, totaling 7,532 MT.
For duck eggs production, it increased by 11.6 percent, recording 574 MT. This was 60 MT higher than the output in the second quarter of 2024.
Duck production, however, decreased by 0.6 percent in the second quarter./PN
