MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte would endorse senatorial candidates who he thinks could help their fellow Filipinos.
“Kung sino iyong Pilipino makatulong sa kapwa niya tao and who has the best of ideas,” the chief executive said.
Specifically, they should be able to help improve food security, said the President.
He mentioned Secretary Emmanuel Piñol and Undersecretary Berna Romulo-Puyat of the Department of Agriculture as his possible bets in the 2019 senatorial election.
At a mass oath-taking of new Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) members in Cebu City on Nov. 17, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez named six people who he said will run for senator under the ruling party. They were:
* representatives Karlo Nograles (Davao City), Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Negros Occidental) and Geraldine Roman (Bataan)
* former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman and presidential political adviser Francis Tolentino
* Presidential Communications Operations Office assistant secretary Esther Margaux “Mocha” Uson
* Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque
But according to Duterte, a senatorial lineup is a “party decision.”
