MANILA – Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido, the Ozamiz City police chief who led recent raids that led to the death of drug suspect Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., is welcome in Iloilo City, according to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Like Parojinog, Mabilog was also linked to illegal drugs by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Philippine National Police’s Director General Ronald Dela Rosa claimed residents of drug-infested areas were requesting for Espenidos’ services.
“Espenido is welcome in Iloilo City so we can work together in getting rid of illegal drugs, maski nag-drop na ang volume sang supply,” Mabilog told Panay News yesterday.
Espenido also led the arrest of Albuera, Leyte mayor Rolando Espinosa last year during his stint as Albuera police chief. Espinosa was killed while in detention.
“It’s better that Espenido himself will see the real situation in Iloilo City,” said Mabilog.
The mayor vehemently denied being involved in illegal drugs either as protector, user or pusher.
He also insisted that there had been no letup in the city government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
At the Department of Justice on Thursday, Espenido said it was up to the Philippine National Police to determine his next assignment.
But he had a message to officials of wherever he may be reassigned: “Kung saan ako malagay, resign na lang, kung involved (in illegal drugs), para humaba buhay.”
Invoking his “clear conscience”, Mabilog said he was confident nothing bad wound happen to him.
In an interview on national television yesterday, Espenido indicated he was open to an assignment in Iloilo City.
“Kausapin ko muna ng masinsinan…Makikita ko naman kung totoo o hindi,” he said.
Mabilog, on the other hand, told Panay News, “Mas magamag-an akon buot nga maubos diri ang mga durogista kon si Major Espenido ang kinahanglan makahimo sina.”
President Duterte branded Iloilo “most shabu-lized” and a “bedrock of illegal drugs.”
Mabilog said there has been no letup in the city government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
“I believe the national government is looking at the performance of the local governments units of local chief executives who were linked to illegal drugs…if there were interventions introduced to stop drug trafficking,” he said.
The mayor is leaving it up to the President to assess if the city government is truly supportive of the campaign.
“Here in Iloilo City, we have not been negligent. Our campaign against drug trafficking is nonstop. For one year, todo-todo ang kampanya naton bangod sa aton pagsuporta, pagsabat sa panawagan sang Presidente,” said Mabilog.
Aside from supporting PDEA and the police logistically, the mayor said, the city government also established drug rehabilitation centers and designed livelihood and skills training programs for drug surrenderers./PN
