MANILA – Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said he will talk to the President regarding the planned burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB).
In a 9-5 vote, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected the consolidated petitions opposing the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to allow the late president a hero’s burial.
Pimentel maintained that Marcos is not a hero and does not deserve a burial at LNMB.
“Definitely a decision by a court cannot, can probably establish a right to be buried in a burial place called ‘Libingan ng mga Bayani’ but a court cannot decide the ‘hero’ status of somebody,” the senate president said.
“Being a hero is the decision of the people, is the collective decision of the people. Not of a court.”
Pimentel said he will try to convince the President to change his mind.
Tuesday’s ruling, he also said, can prolong the division in the country between pro-Marcos and anti-Marcos supporters.
“Pag-uusapan namin. Tignan natin. Pero sasabihin ko siguro sa kanya yung personal opinion ko na he is not a hero – former president Marcos is not a hero, hence, let us rethink the propriety of burying somebody in a place called ‘Libingan ng mga Bayani,'” the senator said.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella welcomed the decision to push for Macros’ Libingan burial and urged the Filipinos to respect the Supreme Court’s authority.
“We acknowledge the decision of the Supreme Court to have the remains of former President Ferdinand Marcos buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as it is the final arbiter of all legal questions,” Abella said.
The Malacañang official hoped the issue will reach its end and encouraged the public to “move forward” and to “continue forging a nation that is peaceable, just and fair to all.”/PN
