ILOILO City – Dr. Jesus Insilada – writer of poems, short stories, and novels in Hiligaynon – stands one in 10 chances of winning US$1 million today.
It’s because he is one of the 10 finalists in the international competition known as the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.
A native of Calinog, Iloilo, he has won four Palanca awards for his Hiligaynon short stories in 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2017.
In 2014 he was chosen as one of the 2014 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher awardees for the secondary level.
Last year, Dr. Insilada received the Princess Maha Chakri Award as “Outstanding Educator in Southeast Asia” in Bangkok, Thailand.
Four of his novels — Panubok, Ang Gugma ni Valentina, Mga Alibangbang sa Handurawan and Sa Sabak sang Kabukiran — have been serialized in Hiligaynon magazine.
Dr. Insilada, 39, holds degrees in Master of Arts in English and Doctor of Education in Educational Management.
Dr. Insilada, or Jess to his peers, was born on March 24, 1978 in Calinog, Iloilo to Vicente Insilada and Aurelia Catigan, both farmers.
Jess graduated valedictorian at Alibunan Elementary School in Alibunan, Calinog, Calinog, Iloilo; with honors at Calinog Agricultural and Industrial College High School; and cum laude at Calinog Agricultural and Industrial College.
“I want to be remembered as a teacher who also writes,” he said. “It has been my advocacy to write about the beauty and the uniqueness of my culture.”/PN
