MANILA – Several senators had choice words for the Security and Exchange Commission’s decision to revoke the certificate of incorporation of the news website Rappler.

The order for Rappler to shut down was “a win for fake news, and a loss for dissenting voices and free speech,” Paolo Benigno Aquino IV said.

“Pure harassment and a clear attack on press freedom” was how Risa Hontiveros described it. “It is also Marcosian. It’s a move straight out of the dictator’s playbook.”

Liberal Party president Francis Pangilinan sought solidarity in “this time of crisis.”

“(Liberal Party) leaders are likewise determined to speak out,” he said. “Over the next few days, you will hear more from us, and we ask that you spread the message: We stand with Rappler and all other truth-tellers. We stand for freedom – the very essence of liberalism.”

Meanwhile Richard Gordon said the SEC order must be substantiated by “convincing and factual evidence.”

“If the media outlet is guilty of the alleged foreign ownership percentage claim, it should be done with due process and give Rappler a chance to prove the accusation as incorrect,” Gordon said.

“The legal actions should proceed with fairness,” he added. “Otherwise, it may be construed as an affront to the guaranteed right of freedom of the press.”

There was a need for further study on the violation Rappler was accused of committing, Grace Poe said.
