ILOILO City – The police arrested a 47-year-old woman yesterday in Barangay Poblacion, Dueñas, Iloilo. She was an illegal gambling suspect.
Alona Jocson of Barangay Capulig, Dueñas was detained at the municipal police station.
Around 12:30 a.m., policemen spotted her soliciting bets for Small Town Lottery (STL).
STL, while legal in Iloilo City, is prohibited in Iloilo province. The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office has not yet allowed any entity to operate the numbers game in the province.
Jocson yielded what the police said were illegal gambling paraphernalia and P383 in various denominations.
Cops believed the money were STL bets.
Jocson faces a charge for violation of Republic Act 9287 (an Act increasing the penalties for illegal numbers games, amending certain provisions of Presidential Decree No. 1602, and for other purposes).
If found guilty by the court for being a collector or agent (cabo, cobrador, coriador or variants thereof), the suspect faces the penalty of imprisonment from eight years and one day to 10 years./PN
