ILOILO City – West Visayas State University in La Paz district will host the World AIDS Day commemoration on Dec. 1.
Several other universities and colleges in the city are participating.
This will be the first time a World AIDS Day event takes place in a university, according to Robert Figuracion Jr., HIV/AIDS coordinator for the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines.
The program will have two parts. First is an event of the Regional Multi-Sectoral Partnership for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control at the College of PESCAR gym from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The second part is a gathering of students and school staff, peer educators and the gay community from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Iloilo City Social Hygiene Clinic will offer free HIV Antibody Test on the same day from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the WVSU Jubilee Park.
The WVSU was chosen to host the event to highlight the advocacy and campaign among the youth, Figuracion said. “This is also to pay tribute to medical workers from the university,” he added.
Other participating schools are Central Philippine University, University of Iloilo, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, and Iloilo Science and Technology University.
The Department of Education – Division of Iloilo City is joining, too.
World AIDS Day aims to raise awareness on the disease and celebrate efforts made to combat its spread. It is being held every Dec. 1 on the recommendation of the World Health Organization in 1988. (PIA/PN)
