ILOILO City – With the two largest sports meets in the country scheduled in the same week – the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique (April 23 to 29) and the National Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Championships in Iba, Zambales (April 22 to 29) – many feared the conquest of most teams could be gravely affected, as young athletes had to choose joining just one of the two tournaments.
But the two Western Visayas football contingents – competing in the simultaneous meets – are proving them wrong, coming out even stronger.
The WVPRISAA secondary men’s football squad, led by Central Philippine University, dealt a crippling 21-0 drubbing on Bicol Region on Monday in Zambales.
Team captain Joshua Supeña hit five goals, as Joshua Gatinao and Raynce Manejable netted three shots apiece in their first game in the National PRISAA.
Centralians Andre Lopez, Patrick Sumergido and Andrew Supeña also hit two points each, as Lester Castor, Fritz Montilla, Steven Macaraeg, and Mark Amogod finished off the dominant victory, each scoring a hit.
Meanwhile, the West Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) secondary boys’ delegation swept CARAGA, 9-0, on Sunday in their second eliminations assignment in the Palarong Pambansa.
Barotac Nuevo booters Jarlson Roy Derutas and Jan Bernard Delariarte scored three points each to lead the way for WVRAA’s success. On Saturday, the team claimed its first win on a 2-1 rout of CALABARZON-STCAA.
The WVRAA elementary boys’ football team and secondary girls’ futsal squad also started on a winning note, blanking Region V–BRAA (Bicol Region) 3-0 and handing a 7-2 upset to NMRAA-Northern Mindanao, respectively./PN
