ROXAS City – Elite triathlete and model Kim Kilgroe and Philippine National Triathlon team member John Leerams Chicano conquered and came out on top in the women’s and men’s standard distance category, respectively, of the inaugural 2017 Capiz International Triathlon on Sunday.
The Olongapo City-native Chicano beat 2015 SEA Games gold medalist Nikko Huelgas by just a few seconds, clocking in at 2:27:09 in the standard distance (1.5km swim, 54km bike, 12km run) course. The former De La Salle Green Tanker Huelgas crossed the finish line at second place (2:28:59), followed by Jorry Ycong (2:28:40), Bacolodnon John Mark Tamaño (3:08:57) and Sulpico Ombay Jr. (3:11:56) rounding out the Top 5.
Meanwhile, in the women’s standard distance event, professional sportswoman and health advocate Kilgroe seized a dominant lead to claim the championship at 2:38:49. Subic, Zambales-based Monica Torres – who recently grabbed the top prize in the Asian Middle Distance Duathlon Championships-ASTC Powerman held in Malaysia – finished behind Kilgroe at 2:53:37.
Cebuana Cianyl Gonzalez (3:12:06), Ilongga Glenna Louie Robles Venerable (3:26:13) and Mary Luz Hermosa Shimizu (3:27:34) capped off the Top 5 behind veteran athletes Kilgroe and Torres.
“Thank you Roxas and congrats everyone who raced this weekend!” posted Kilgroe, who trains under the prestigious Trisutto coaching team of Australian triathlon coach Brett “The Doc” Sutton, on social media. “Got to take the tape today at the inaugural TriAksyon Capiz International Triathlon, a unique fully draft-legal course. Good turnout for the first tri here in Capiz and for me, a great training day – now for some seafood then back to work.”
The TriAksyon course took triathletes on an arduous journey that passed by numerous Capiz landmarks and tourist destinations, heritage site Sta. Monica Parish Church (that houses the biggest bell in Asia) in Panay town and the city’s new development area Pueblo de Panay, among them.
Participants also took a plunge in Capiz’s bountiful waters, with a 1.5-km swim from the People’s Park to Mantalinga Island and back.
Aside from being the swimming area, Roxas City’s Baybay Beach – which boasts a 7.5-km shoreline – also served as a viewing area for those who wished to witness the historic event.
TriAksyon is part of the Capiztahan festivities – a weeklong festival commemorating the 116th foundation anniversary of the civil government of Capiz./PN
