MANILA – The Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association (WVPRISAA) delegation finished at second place in the medal tally of the 2017 National PRISAA Games held at the Zambales Sports Complex in Iba, Zambales.
WVPRISAA finished the week-long tournament with 171 medals – 53 gold, 53 silver and 65 bronze – behind overall champion Region VII (Central Visayas) at 124-64-59. Negros Island Region is at third with a 38-2-12 slate.
WVPRISAA showed its dominance in medal-rich athletics where Kim Villaruz, Dan Angelo Demontano, Kyla Almalbis and Shainne Lou Rosas contributed gold medals.
The Capiz-native Villaruz took home gold in the girls’ 3,000-meter with her 13:19 clocking. She then followed it up with golden finishes in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter events.
Jaro, Iloilo-native Demontano, meanwhile, claimed gold in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles after finishing at 16.08 seconds, beating Mc Angel Lomolso (20.07) and Dexter Patrick Pueblo (22.96).
Roxas, Capiz pride Almalbis bagged gold in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles at 16.95 seconds, against Frances Aldaba (17.62) and Clarymel Cabildo (17.97).
Capiznon Rosas claimed the gold medal in the girls’ long jump with her 4.79 leap. She was followed by NIR’s Antonette Aguilion, who had 4.72 meters and Erika Kee, who had 4.68 meters.
Also capturing gold medals in athletics are Andrea Marie Baylos (javelin throw and discus throw), Alter Balogo (boys’ long jump), Clarence Gaylan (boys’ 100-meter), Diane Cabarador (women’s 3,000-meter walk), Rhea Mae Borres (girls’ 200-meter) and Niel Knowell De Felipe (boy’s 200-meter).
Ilongga Juliana Therese Lee, meanwhile, bannered WVPRISAA’s campaign in swimming as she took home three gold medals in the 12 to 16 years old 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke, and 400-meter freestyle relay.
The WVPRISAA boys’ basketball team, meanwhile, settled for a silver medal after a 76-64 defeat at the hands of Central Visayas, which was represented by the University of Visayas Green Lancers.
Over 4,500 athletes representing 18 different sports participated in the National PRISAA. The tournament features two divisions namely youth (17-years and under) and senior (18-24 years old)./PN
