ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) will train its men on marksmanship and gun safety.
This is in accordance with the new directive from Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Guillermo Eleazar.
“This is good for our police personnel para mangin firearm-proficient kita,” said PRO-6 spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis.
In Tondo, Manila, a policeman accidentally fired his gun, leaving a delivery serviceman dead.
“As members of a law enforcement agency entrusted by the people to carry firearms, we have to make sure that the concept of responsible gun ownership would always be at the heart and mind of every PNP personnel,” said Eleazar.
“This includes knowing how to use them and the proficiency in using them,” he added.
On Sept. 6, a similar incident happened in this city.
Police Senior Master Sergeant Stephen Aguilar of Barangay Cuartero, Jaro district died of a gunshot wound.
His wife Sally told police she tried to awaken her husband to report to work.
Aguilar reportedly got his gun – a .9mm pistol – under the pillow but it went off hitting his head.
He died while being treated at the Iloilo Mission Hospital.
A spent bullet shell of a .9mm pistol was recovered from Aguilar’s room.
On the other hand, Iloilo City Police Office director, Police Colonel Uldarico Garbanzos said they will start their training this week.
He will tap experts to discuss gun safety in six police stations.
“We need to refresh them on how to keep their guns safe para hindi madisgrasya ang iban nga tawo,” Garbanzos said.
