SAN JOSE, Antique – The Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) boys’ basketball team started its campaign in the 60th Palarong Pambansa on the wrong note with an 83-66 defeat to Davao on Monday at the Evelio D. Javier Sports Complex.
The Rodel Camacho-mentored secondary basketball squad struggled heavily against the hot shooting of the Davaoeños and fell by as much as 20 points late in the third quarter.
WVRAA made its last push behind Ryan Calama-an in the final quarter to come to as close as 11 markers but Davao found its groove anew to pull away in the match for good.
“Medyo nag-struggle kami sa opensa and yung mga plays namin hindi namin nasunod,” Camacho told Panay News. “Good thing it is just our first game and we will prepare hard for our next one.”
The WVRAA boys’ basketball team will return to action at 4 p.m. today against Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) before concluding its elimination assignment against Region 3 (Central Luzon) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
WVRAA’s Negrense counterparts were more fortunate. The Negros Island Region (NIRAA) basketball squad pulled away in the final quarter to open its campaign in the week-long tournament with a 99-87 victory over ARMM.
Meanwhile, in secondary volleyball, the WVRAA women’s volleyball team scored a 25-18, 25-18 victory over Region IV-B in their match held at the Sibalom Municipal Gymnasium./PN
