SAN JOSE, Antique – The Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) delegation has hiked its gold medal tally through stunning athletics performances in Day 3 of the 2017 Palarong Pambansa on Tuesday at the Binirayan Sports Complex.
Ilongga Elvy Villagoniza opened the gold medal haul for the WVRAA team as she nearly broke the Palaro record with her 5.63 meter leap in the secondary girl’s high jump event.
“Thanks sa tanan nga nagsuporta sa akon. Sa mga trainors kag sa mga coach ko thank you gid,” Villagoniza told Panay News. “Muntik ko nang ma-break yung (Palaro) record pero ok na din.”
Filipino-American Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks also contributed gold for the Steil Delos Reyes-mentored team as she topped the secondary girl’s high jump event with her 1.63 meter performance.
Finishing behind the Leon, Iloilo-native Brooks in the finale are Region II’s Cherry Mae Banatao with 1.60 meters; and Region IV-B’s Evangeline Caminova, who had 1.55 meters.
Also coming up with golden performances for the WVRAA athletics team are Mary Rose Billones in the elementary girl’s high jump and Adrian Canaya in elementary boy’s shot put.
John Clark Segutier, meanwhile, gave the region its sixth gold medal, the first in the arnis event, when he scored 68 points in the secondary boy’s Anyo Individual Event Single Weapon. At second place is Negros Island Region’s (NIR) John Robert Escleto.
WVRAA also added two silver medals in Day 3 courtesy of arnis’ Angie Nicole Reyes (secondary girl’s Anyo Individual Event Single Weapon) and Precious Neryet Baticbatic (elementary Anyo Individual Event Single Weapon).
Gymnast Alexander Moronio contributed two bronze medals from Mushroom Cluster 1 and the individual all-around events. The WVRAA individual all-around team of gymnast Lennon Chiva, Walter Petipet and Roger Randera also landed third.
The NIR had a gold medal drought in Day 3 as it only won two silver, from Escleto and Lexsiel Rublico (Anyo Event individual Double Weapon-arnis) and two bronze from gymnast Alyssa Chavez (individual all-around) and Kiana Alagaban (freehand).
As of 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the WVRAA is at second place with six gold, five silver and four bronze medals followed by NIR at third with a 5-5-3 tally. The NCRAA remains on top with a 23-15-7 medal haul./PN
