ILOILO City – Western Visayas’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections soared past 20,000.
With 84 new infections recorded on Friday, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the region is now 20,139, according to the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6.
The additional cases also pushed to 1,823 the region’s total active cases.
The province of Negros Occidental has the most number of active cases at 1,011.
Iloilo province came in next with 250 cases, followed by Bacolod City (230); Iloilo City (141); Aklan (122); Capiz (57); Guimaras (12); and Antique (two).
As to the classification of the active cases, 82.59 percent are asymptomatic, 12.80 percent are mild, and 4.50 percent are severe.
Meanwhile, the number of total recoveries in the region remains higher than the actives cases.
Based on the Oct. 21 data of DOH-6, the total recovered COVID-19 patients now stand at 17,730 with 120 new recoveries.
Most of the recovered patients are from Bacolod City with 5,048; Negros Occidental, 4,740; Iloilo City, 4,128; Iloilo province, 2,344; Capiz, 992; Guimaras, 202; and Aklan, 200.
The region’s COVID-19 death cases, on the other hand, are 584. On Wednesday, eight deaths were recorded.
Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te of DOH-6 said the region’s cases are no longer that high.
She, however, urged the public to never be complacent and continue practicing health protocols such as wearing facemask and face shields, sanitizing hands through frequent handwashing or use of alcohol, maintaining safe physical distancing, and acting based on correct information./PN
