BACOLOD City – The Christmas celebration in Negros Occidental has been “generally peaceful,” according to Inspector Charmae De Paz, public information officer of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo).
“We are thankful to the local government units, the public, PNP (Philippine National Police) personnel, and other government and nongovernment agencies for their cooperation and support for our campaign Ligtas Kapaskuhan 2017,” De Paz told Panay News via text message yesterday.
There were no reported incidents of indiscriminate firing in the province on Christmas Day, she added.
The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) earlier sent a directive to all police chiefs in Western Visayas that there will be a “one-strike policy” on incidents involving stray bullets.
If these incidents are not solved within 24 hours, police chiefs or assigned police officers will be relieved, PRO-6 said.
Nocppo chief Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil Jr. once again appealed for the public’s cooperation to keep the New Year’s Eve celebration peaceful.
Nocppo hopes to have zero incidents of indiscriminate firing on New Year’s Eve.
Nocppo also advised the public to use alternative and safe noise makers in welcoming the New Year.
It added that safety measures must also be observed, especially when travelling, to avoid untoward incidents.
Police assistance hubs and desks will still be strategically set up in places of convergence like terminals, malls, and ports, among others, to ensure public safety on New Year’s Day.
De Paz said the hubs and desks were effective safety measures, based on their observation during Christmas.
The information dissemination campaign – the distribution of flyers containing safety tips and reminders and posting of tarpaulins showing information on firecracker zones – is also being conducted.
Foot and mobile patrol are also intensified, De Paz said./PN
